Description:
For persons nominated to be a member of a team for rescue and recovery of casualties from within the confined space in the event of an emergency. As a pre-requisite to this course candidates must have gained accreditation on a City & Guilds (NOS) 6160-03 event.
Learning Outcomes / Course Content
- Following the outcomes of the Confined Spaces Regulations 1997
- Entering and working in structures which are known or have the potential to contain irrespirable atmospheres
- How to conduct a dynamic risk assessment
- Working with permits to work
- Selecting, verifying function and integrity of breathing apparatus
- How to understand the nature and occurrence of problem atmospheres
- Wearing breathing apparatus in hostile atmospheres
- Use rescue equipment safely and in accordance with manufacturers’ instructions
- Locate and recover casualties to a safe location
- Administer basic first aid to the recovered surface casualty
- Maintain emergency communications
- Handover to the emergency services
- Secure the site for post-incident investigation
- Hygiene and decontamination procedures
Training Information:
The course comprises of theory input practical training and assessments .Candidates should bring their own safety footwear, coveralls, hard hat and gloves for the practical exercises.
This course makes use of all equipment and includes practical exercises in confined space simulations. This is a physically demanding course and delegates (as a minimum requirement) must complete a medical honesty questionaire or be in possession of a medical certificate issued by a Doctor or Occuppational Nurse.

Training Certification:
City & Guilds question papers and practical assessment observation checklists will be submitted upon assessment completion and certificates will be issued subject to final verification.
CS5 Emergency Rescue and Recovery of Casualties from High Risk Confined Spaces using Rescue Equipment and Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus in Hostile Atmospheres.
Course information
A three day course for persons nominated or who are required to enter Confined
Spaces and retrieve casualties. To be eligible for this course, learners should have
completed a recognised First Aid Qualification.
Learning outcomes
There are eight learning outcomes to this combined unit, where appropriate, units
03 and 04 will be covered simultaneously.
CS5 Description
- Outcome 1 Prepare to work safely in dangerous atmospheres under emergency conditions
- Outcome 2 Enter and exit confined spaces safely
- Outcome 3 Selection and safe use of rescue equipment in accordance with manufacturers’ instructions
- Outcome 4 Prepare and use self-contained open circuit breathing apparatus
- in accordance with manufacturers’ specifications
- Outcome 5 Follow procedures and work safely
- Outcome 6 Deal with emergencies
- Outcome 7 Use appropriate behaviour for carrying out emergency rescue and recovery of casualties from confined spaces
- Outcome 8 Use industry specific knowledge for carrying out emergency rescue and recovery of casualties from confined space
This course will follow guidelines set out by WUK Confined Spaces Classification Guidelines, Confined Spaces Regulations 1997 and units from the City & Guilds Qualification in Emergency Rescue and Recovery of Casualties from Confined Spaces: Water/Utilities (6160-08)
